All batters will be awarded 30 seconds of bonus time following the regulation period of each round. Story, bidding to become the first winner in Rockies history, will make Colorado the first team to have 12 different players participate in the Derby, spanning 14 total appearances. He will join Dante Bichette ; Ellis Burks ; Hall of Famer Larry Walker ; Vinny Castilla ; Todd Helton ; Matt Holliday ; Carlos González ; Michael Cuddyer ; Troy Tulowitzki ; Justin Morneau ; and teammate Charlie Blackmon . Additionally, Story will become the 24th player from a host team to participate in the Derby.

He wanted to honor his longtime friend Ricky Palmer, who died of brain cancer in October -- and he wanted to send a message to cancer survivors. Pete Alonso is your 2021 Home Run Derby champion, smacking scores of towering home runs in the thin air of Coors Field to become back-to-back champion. To celebrate the midsummer festivities, we asked ESPN MLB experts Alden Gonzalez, Buster Olney, Jeff Passan, Jesse Rogers and David Schoenfield for their pre-Derby predictions and post-Derby takeaways.
Home Run Derby Odds
Each batter is allowed to call one 45-second time out in the regulation period of each round . The winner of Ohtani vs. Soto will face the winner of Perez vs. Alonso, while the winner of Gallo vs. Story will face the winner of Olson vs. Mancini. After the semifinal matchups, the two remaining hitters will face off in the final round. There’s nothing quite like watching a home run swing, when a batter really gets ahold of one and sends the ball into orbit. That only happens a few times per game if you’re lucky, though. • Whatever you say about Ohtani’s 2021, it’s not sufficient.

Players can also receive bonus time based on home run distance. Each batter gets one one 45-second timeout in each of the regulation periods (i.e., not during any bonus time that's added on). Any tie in any round will be broken by a 60-second "swing off." The winner receives a $1 million prize.

Surhoff ; 2004 winner Miguel Tejada ; teammate Chris Davis ; and former teammates Adam Jones , Manny Machado and Trumbo . • The Rockies, of course, have hit a lot of long home runs in their history. But since Statcast began tracking in 2015, no Colorado player has hit a longer one than Story’s 487-foot blast on Sept. 5, 2018, onto the left-field concourse at Coors Field. With the benefit of playing half his games at altitude, Story has averaged 416 feet on homers in his career, tied with Stanton for the longest of any player with 100-plus roundtrippers in that span. The Home Run Derby format has remained unchanged since 2015.

As part of an agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association prior to the 2019 season, the Home Run Derby prize pool was increased from $725,000 to $2.5 million. En route to his 2019 triumph, Alonso used the timeout to great effect in the semifinals against Acuña. More than halfway through the round, he had just seven homers to Acuña’s 19, but he regrouped after the brief break to blast his way past his Braves opponent and advance. Schwarber, a natural home run hitter who valiantly finished second in this event to Bryce Harper in 2017, is maintaining a lower profile than his peers. And Seager, who participated in the Derby as a rookie in 2016, will try to mount a triumphant return to Dodger Stadium after leaving L.A.

He owns two career homers that have traveled 490-plus feet, including a 495-footer on July 20, 2018, that is tied for fifth longest in the Statcast era. Since 2017, Gallo’s 51 homers of 110-plus mph rank second in MLB behind the Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton, while his 16 homers of 450-plus feet are tied with Stanton for the most. Gallo is also tied for first with eight moonshots struck with a launch angle of 40-plus degrees. Pujols, who at age 42 is by far the oldest Derby participant ever (39-year-olds Barry Bonds and Rafael Palmeiro competed in 2004), is an interesting inclusion. With 685 homers as of this writing, Pujols’ career total is also the most of any Derby participant at the time of the event (Bonds had 681 as of the ’04 Derby). Rodríguez is just the 14th rookie participant, hoping to join Alonso and Aaron Judge as the only rookies to win it outright (Wally Joyner was a rookie co-champ with Darryl Strawberry in 1986).
After the first round, the winner of the Schwarber-Pujols matchup will meet the winner of Soto-RamÍrez. On the other side of the bracket, the Alonso-Acuña winner faces the Seager-Rodríguez winner. The two players left standing will meet in the final round. Alonso, whose excitement for this particular event is infectious, is looking to join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time winners of the Derby.
MLB All-Star Home Run Derby: Results, bracket and highlights as stars swung for the fences in Denver
The CBS Sports stable of MLB writers recently conducted a roundtable on this very topic, and five writers made four different predictions -- Story, Ohtani, Mancini, and OIson. Since Ohtani was the only participant to earn two votes from us, we'll go with him. After all, he's the MLB home run leader, and he also hits the ball harder than almost anyone. In addition to the presence of Ohtani, who may be the AL MVP frontrunner thanks to his excellence at the plate and on the mound this season, there's also the inspiring Mancini, who's a survivor of stage 3 colon cancer.
He missed out on playing during the playoff run and World Series due to his injury, however he was on the bench and participated in the onfield celebrations. Here is chance to play and I really hope he can pull it off. The seeds were determined by the participants’ 2022 home run totals through play on July 13. But the Derby event that debuted five years later has become a showcase all its own. The 2022 T-Mobile Home Run Derby features a truly loaded lineup in an iconic venue -- one whose last turn as the All-Star innkeeper actually predates the Derby. Back in 1980, the only All-Star Game appetizers were a Dodgers old-timers’ game and an American League and National League workout that fans could attend for free.
Overall, it marks the eighth consecutive Derby to feature a hometown competitor. Alonso, who is bidding to join Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. ( ) and Céspedes ( ) as the only back-to-back champions, is the only hitter in the field with Derby experience following his win in 2019 at Cleveland. Alonso remains one of five Mets players to partake in the Derby, joining 1986 co-winner Darryl Strawberry ; Howard Johnson ; Bobby Bonilla ; and David Wright . Seeding was determined by each participant’s home run total through Tuesday’s games. Ties were broken by awarding the higher seed to the player with a higher home run total in 2020, however, since Mancini did not play in 2020, the tie between him and Alonso was broken using 2019 home run totals. See the accompanying file for the full 2021 T-Mobile Home Run Derby bracket.
The 2020 edition was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021 Home Run Derby field features some of the best sluggers in the game today. The bracket is single-elimination, so whoever wins the head-to-head matchup advances while the loser is done for the night. Batters will also be granted one 45-second timeout at any time of their choosing during regulation time each round. All hitters will have 30 extra seconds after time is up, and they can earn an additional 30 seconds of time if they hit a 475-foot or longer home run during the round.
